Our accommodation was at Matha Forest Resort, nestled at the foothills of Matha Buru hills in Purulia. The only catch was that it was almost 50 kilometers away from the station.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, various festivals are celebrated in different districts of Bengal like Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum in the name of Tusu Parab which is mainly the festival of crops. Throughout the month women and girls participate in this puja. On this day (Sankranti ) girls decorate the Chowdol with Tusu and immerse their adorable Tusu at nearby ponds or river.
The “Bandna/Badna Festival” in Purulia is a unique and culturally rich celebration that takes place in the Purulia district of West Bengal, India. This festival is a vibrant display of local tribal traditions and is often associated with the region’s indigenous communities and the Santhal tribe.
Under the azure autumn sky, amidst the amorous cascades of prancing clouds and swaying ‘kash’, rises the reverberating hum of worship of the warrior goddess— Durga. A daughter has returned home, triumphant. Her worship is a heedy amalgam of indiscriminating joy, creativity, love and unbarred popular participation.
The brick temples of Bengal have been created by Bengal artisans in their style. These temples are unique. Various types of brick temples can be found in West Bengal, such as Chala temple, Ratna temple, Deul temple, etc.
The most important part of the story is that the workers still to date resort to the 500 years old method of boat making. They did not adopt any contemporary machine or tools yet. Instruments used for building the boat are the same as those primitive ones used 500 years ago.
