Upper Mustang is a dry river valley exist near the Annapurna Circuit in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas. In the past, this valley was a “Forbidden kingdom” within Nepal. Due to decades of segregation from the world, it matured its own heritage and custom, which closely similar to Tibetan lifestyle.

In only a few corners of the globe will you encounter the Pacific Ocean embracing a mountain range as it does along the sea-to-sky highway leading to Whistler. The journey unveils a breathtaking panorama of azure waters caressing the rugged coastal mountains. En route, the sight of Shannon Falls cascading down, alongside its provincial park, captivates the senses.

Our accommodation was at Matha Forest Resort, nestled at the foothills of Matha Buru hills in Purulia. The only catch was that it was almost 50 kilometers away from the station.
From the end of November, snowfall season begins, lasting until April. Between April and November, it still experiences occasional snowfall and flurries. Periodic rain with high winds makes the weather inclement and temperatures drop below freezing, often reaching well below twenty degrees in Celsius.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, various festivals are celebrated in different districts of Bengal like Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum in the name of Tusu Parab which is mainly the festival of crops. Throughout the month women and girls participate in this puja. On this day (Sankranti ) girls decorate the Chowdol with Tusu and immerse their adorable Tusu at nearby ponds or river.
Gangasagar Mela is one of the largest and oldest annual congregations of mankind. The event has fascinated the pious Hindus since the days of the Mahabharata. Even during my first visit to the fair about fifteen years ago, I realised that very few things epitomize India as quintessentially as the Gangasagar Mela.
