The last day of the Bengali Poush Mash (the month of Poush) is called Makar Sankranti. This festival is celebrated all over India in various names. Ma Ganga merges herself with the Sagar (the sea) on this special day. Hence grand festivals and fairs are celebrated in Gangasagar.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, various festivals are celebrated in different districts of Bengal like Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum in the name of Tusu Parab which is mainly the festival of crops. Throughout the month women and girls participate in this puja. On this day (Sankranti ) girls decorate the Chowdol with Tusu and immerse their adorable Tusu at nearby ponds or river.

On the occasion of Tusu, fairs and festivals are held. The places take on various colours and the dusk echoes with a morose strain with the immersion of Tusu.
