Kumortuli

Kumortuli is one of the core spaces for sculpting and idol crafting in Bengal. Located in Shobhabazar at the Northern part of the city, visiting Kumortuli before puja is an unique experience. The narrow, dingy lanes packed with partly crafted idols, the scent of mud and clay, and the artists working all day and night feels like pure magic.

There is yet another speciality of Kumortuli. Locals believe that Goddess Durga makes her visit to Kumortuli during puja on arriving, she puts her ornaments on at the house of Jorashanko’s Shiv Krishna Das, later she stops for a meal at Kumortuli’s Abhay Charan Mitra’s House, and finally stops for the night to watch a dance performance at the Shobhabazar Rajbari.
