Her original name Fatima A Rashid was changed to Baby when her film career began as a child artist at just five or six years. Her first role as leading lady was when she was just 14 in Mehboob’s film Taqdeer opposite Motilal.
When the first poster came out before the film’s release in October 1965, there was little to choose between Chowdhury and H.P. Briggs’ famous portrait of the Raja made in 1832. As the sestercentennial (250th) birth anniversary celebrations of Raja Rammohun Roy pick up pace in India and Great Britain, one can only look back in wonder at the film.
But the 34-year-old Ishaan Ghose is made of tougher stuff. His Jhilli is completely dedicated to a few characters whose life revolves around the Dhapa dump yard which is also their sole source of livelihood.
The biggest takeaway from the film is the way Datta discovered a whole array of his cast to closely resemble the persons they were portraying. Among these, Aparajito would never have been the film it has turned out to be without Jeetu
The legendary director pays little heed to the brouhaha over the Rs 100-crore or Rs 500-crore box office collections of the present crop of movies. He said, “The public is easily swayed by the publicity blitz. They feel, if a film has made Rs 200 crore, it must be good. My first film ‘Swayamvaram’ (1972) cost only a few lakhs, won four national awards and did pretty well at the theatres.”

The film is divided into several sections with sub-plots interwoven seamlessly. One is the track where Soumitra is being recorded live by Dr. Sen and the other covers his evolution as an actor. The younger self of Soumitra is portrayed incredibly well by Jisshu Sengupta.
But much more than these diversions in the local politics within the tribal areas of West Bengal, the flashbacks into Mahananda’s life are the more interesting facets of the entire drama.
