The Stone Spouts at Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

The stone spouts, commonly seen in Kathmandu valley are traditional water supply system that has been in continuous use for hundred of years. Stone spouts, an unique example of architecture at its best, are beautifully carved stone elements mostly in the shape of crocodile head (considered as a holy water animal in Hindu mythology) installed in the front or side walls of sunken and stepped platforms for channeling natural spring water or ground water for human use.

Photo Story: The Silent Majesty of Autumn

The spout systems were first of all created and established by the Lichhavi rulers (6 th century) and expanded mostly by the malla rulers (12-18 century). As per survey in 2012, It was amazing that despite the age of stone spouts, some of the most ingenious of architectures in Nepal are alive and well used by the people, nobly characterizing the technical and engineering skills of the ancient people of Nepal.
