“Didi, Didi, I haven’t had anything to eat since yesterday. Please, Didi…,” Raju pleaded, halting me on my way to the eatery outside my college one afternoon. Without a second thought, I purchased for him his favourite lunch he asked for – a plate of rice, some fried potatoes, and a fish curry.
His appeals had become a regular occurrence since my second semester. However, one day during my fifth semester, I found myself without cash to fulfil his request.
“No cash?” he asked, disappointment evident in his expression. “I’m sorry,” I muttered, unable to help.
For a moment, he appeared crestfallen. Then, with a sudden resolve, he seized my hand and led me forcefully towards a swank café nearby. With an air of astonishing confidence, he placed the order, “Whatever she wants and the usual for me.”
