As an amateur photographer from India, World Photography Day is like my second birthday, except with no presents and more pressure to post something incredible on social media. While everyone else celebrates by sharing their best shots, I’m here to spill the beans on the less glamorous side of the lens.
First up, there’s the eternal wait. You know, that moment when you’re poised like a hawk, ready to capture the magic, and then… nothing. Hours tick by, your legs cramp, and just when you finally blink, the action happens. It’s almost like the universe is playing a practical joke. I once waited for two hours to capture a bird in flight, only to miss the shot because I was too busy scratching an itch on my nose. Moral of the story? Patience is a virtue, but more so is a good sense of humour.
Then there’s the editing marathon. Photo editing is where time goes to die. What starts as a quick touch-up can quickly spiral into a multi-hour ordeal, where you lose all sense of time and space. One minute you’re sipping your coffee, and the next, it’s cold, your eyes are burning, and you’ve somehow transformed a simple landscape into a surrealist nightmare. But hey, at least it’s art, right?
And finally, the misunderstanding. One of my friends told her fiance that he is a photographer. She nodded politely and then asked when he’s going to get a “real job.” It’s a common theme among us creative types, but we’ve learned to laugh it off. After all, every great artist was misunderstood at first, right?
So, here’s to all the photographers out there, patiently waiting, endlessly editing, and still explaining their “real job” to relatives. Happy World Photography Day!
