Upper Mustang is a dry river valley exist near the Annapurna Circuit in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas. In the past, this valley was a “Forbidden kingdom” within Nepal. Due to decades of segregation from the world, it matured its own heritage and custom, which closely similar to Tibetan lifestyle. Currently, opened to foreigners, Upper Mustang forms a prime tourist destination due to its unique desert-like terrain, mind blowing dramatic red wall, its unique history, and culture. A citadel bordering Chinese territory to the north, is full of monasteries, ghostly forts, magical landscape, and a very rich unspoiled Buddhist culture. An abandoned King’s palace is guarded by a Tibetan mastiff dog. A visit to Upper Mustang will discern like you have been to a different globe.
