Kulasekarapattinam or Kulasai Dussehra is a vibrant festival celebrated with fervor in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in the village of Kulasai. Mutharamman temple which is more than 300 years old is the epicenter of this Vijayadasami or Dussehra celebrations.

The temple is so popular in the down south region of the state, where the presiding deity is a self-manifested Goddess Kali. As she is worshipped with the ornaments made of the pearls taken from the sea, she is called as Mutharamman. Lasting for about ten days, it commemorates the victory of good over evil, echoing the essence of the larger Dussehra festival celebrated across India.

What distinguishes Kulasai Dussehra is its unique rituals and customs deeply rooted in local folklore. The highlight of the festival is the grand procession of idols of deities, adorned with intricate decorations and carried on elaborately decorated chariots. Traditional music, dance, and vibrant cultural performances captivate the spectators, creating an atmosphere filled with joy and devotion.

The festival also features various rituals and ceremonies performed to appease the deities and seek their blessings for prosperity and well-being. Kulasai Dussehra not only serves as a religious event but also acts as a platform for social cohesion, fostering community bonds and preserving cultural heritage.
