Hrishikesh Mukherjee
“Na jaane kyun hota hai yeh zindagi ke saath
Achanak yeh mann kisi ke jaane ke baad
Kare phir uski yaad chhoti chhoti si baat
Na jaane kyun”
Donno why this happens with life
Suddenly, we long for those small moments,
When they are gone,
Don’t know why.
Old songs and movies have a magical way of transporting us back to our childhood, wrapping us in cherished memories, and bringing smiles to our faces, even when no one is watching. The hidden treasures fill our hearts make us warm and cozy and in a cool, cloudy autumn morning like today. Simple moments have shaped our lives. Nostalgia truly has a special place in our hearts.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films always made us laugh. Sunday evening was a melting pot for the adults and the kids in front of the idiot box.
In our joint family Sunday evenings were special. Watching Hindi movies on the small screen, all squeezed in the living room with tea and snack breaks with Bengali news at 7:30 pm, the indelible moments of growing up and old.
Today is the birthday of film maker Hrishikesh Mukherjee. As the songs and the scenes from his movies rolled in my head, I realized his films were like a warm embrace, inviting us into the lives of relatable characters.
In the heart of his movies, there lived a family. Not a glamorous, larger-than-life family, but a simple, everyday one, like my own, celebrating the ordinary and finding beauty in it.
The characters in his stories were our neighbors, our friends and siblings and of course our relatives who were part of our growing up. They faced common dilemmas, of love, family conflicts, and generational differences and still had a way of making these ordinary tales extraordinary.
His films were filled with humor, the kind that made you laugh with, not at, the characters. It was a gentle humor that celebrated the quirks and idiosyncrasies of life.
In idolship of Guddi or professional coflict in Abhiman, or the impish sister in law of Khubsurat, we all have one in the family.

And music! Oh yes, they were another hallmark and even after four decades they are part of our lives.. His songs were like old friends, easy to sing along with and impossible to forget. They weren’t flashy, but they were heartwarming.
And in the end, when the credits rolled, you didn’t just watch a movie; you felt like you’d been a part of a family’s journey. That was the magic of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s storytelling style – it made the ordinary feel extraordinary and left you with a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and a warm feeling of nostalgia.
He brought the best team of writers, actors musicians, singers and other to deliver magic for us who grew up in the 70s and 80s.
