Eric Arthur Blair has been trying his hand at writing for a while. But success was eluding him. His manuscripts were being rejected by editors, response to whatever he managed to published was lukewarm. In 1932, he finally decided to change things up a bit.
He adopted a pen name— George Orwell. The name was inspired by the river Orwell of Suffolk. He tasted success briefly after the publication of ‘Animal Farm’ (1945) and ‘1984’ (1949) before taking the stairway to heaven in 1950. He was 47 years old.
